Diana Statue: All eyes on her boys as new tribute to Diana is revealed

More than 20 years after her death, Diana, Princess of Wales’s two sons unveiled a statue on what would have been her 60th birthday. While many were thinking of the late Princess and eagerly looking forward to seeing the long-awaited statue, all eyes were on her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, for clues on the status of their relationship.

This is only the second time William and Harry have been seen together since Harry and his wife, Meghan, carried out their last engagements as senior royals in 2020. Harry’s last visit in April, to attend the funeral of his grandfather, the Duke of Edinburgh, was a solo visit as the Duchess of Sussex was heavily pregnant.

The last time the world saw the brothers together at an official royal engagement was at Westminster Abbey for Commonwealth Day 2020 which was the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s final engagement before they officially stepped back as senior royals and relocated, ultimately, to California.

In the months following, Harry and Meghan have spoken openly about life behind palace walls and the Duke of Sussex has spoken of problems in his relationship with his brother. This isn’t the first time Harry has touched on his relationship with his brother. Reports of a rift between the two have gone around the British press since 2018, Prince Harry saying in response at the time, “we have been through hell together, but we are now on different paths.”

The brothers commissioned the statue in 2017 in honour of the twentieth anniversary of Diana’s death. In a joint statement upon the unveiling, the brothers said:

“Today, on what would have been our mother’s 60th birthday, we remember her love, strength and character — qualities that made her a force for good around the world, changing countless lives for the better.

“Every day, we wish she were still with us, and our hope is that this statue will be seen forever as a symbol of her life and her legacy.”

It is unclear when we will see the princes together again in public. It’s likely Harry will return to the United States to spend time with his family and newborn daughter. Rumours of the Sussexes joining in The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in 2022 have already begun, but no one will know until the time comes closer.
