The Duchess of Cornwall paid a visit to schoolchildren in Glasgow, joining in as they learn lessons about climate change as COP26 began, and telling them, “We’re all relying on you to make it a safer world.”
Camilla visited the pupils of Wallacewell Primary School on Monday and saw firsthand how the school is preparing its students for the realities of climate change and doing what they can to protect the environment.
According to Clarence House, the teachers “ensure climate change and sustainability are a key focus of their learning and teaching,” and that students “have been looking at growing food, habitats (pollinating plants), litter picking and recycling” as ways they can achieve this. As part of their greener initiatives, the school has also partnered with Zero Waste Scotland to monitor their food waste during the lunch hour.
Camilla presented the students with a copy of It’s Up to Us, a book written for Scottish schoolchildren for COP26. The book is a partnership between Prince Charles’s Prince’s Foundation, What On Earth Publishing, author Christopher Lloyd, and 33 illustrators from around the world who have highlighted a voyage through nature.
The book features a foreword from Prince Charles that reads: “Children have a unique curiosity for nature and for this amazing planet we call home. This is because part of being young is knowing that we are, in fact, part of nature ourselves…
“What the world needs is for children all around it to imagine the type of future you want to build. I don’t know about you, but I love to draw and paint, like many of the artists in this book. So here’s my challenge to you; take out a blank piece of paper and draw, paint, or write about the future you would like to see, one that puts nature at the heart of everything we do. That way, we can share our ideas with as many people as possible and, together, we can help make our planet strong and healthy for generations to come.”
The Wallacewell Primary School tweeted about the Duchess’s visit, “We were delighted to welcome HRH Duchess of Rothesay to our school today straight from #COP26Glasgow. We can’t wait to read ‘It’s Up To Us’ and would like to thank The Prince’s Foundation for a fantastic presentation.”
