Turquoises for December: our royal favourites

Turquoise is the jewel for December, and while it is not seen in many royal tiaras, it has appeared on some royals in various forms over the years. However, let’s take a look at some of our favourite royal turquoise tiaras around the world.

The Teck Turquoise Tiara

It is worn by the Duchess of Gloucester and is part of a set that includes a necklace, earrings and brooch. It was originally made for Queen Mary (born Princess Mary of Teck)’s mother, Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge, and the future Queen Mary inherited the jewels. Queen Mary later gifted it to her daughter-in-law, Princess Alice, Duchess of Glocester. It’s a rather large tiara that features diamonds with large turquoise jewels spread throughout. The turquoise set can be seen on the current Duchess of Gloucester in the photo below.

Princess Sofia of Sweden’s wedding tiara

Princess Sofia of Sweden’s wedding tiara has turned out to be very versatile, and the original emeralds that were on the tiara can be replaced with other jewels including diamonds, pearls and turquoises. We have only ever seen the tiara with the turquoises once – at the 2019 Nobel Prize gala. She wore the tiara to match her turquoise gown and turquoise earrings for the occasion.

The Persian Turquoise Tiara

The late Princess Margaret had a large tiara that contained turquoises, but its current whereabouts is unknown. It’s thought it is in the possession of one of her children. It had been part of a set, but some of the pieces were sold at an auction after her death. However, the tiara was not sold. Margaret followed in the footsteps of her mother, the Queen Mother, in wearing the diadem; she was gifted the tiara for her 21st birthday by King George and Queen Elizabeth.

The Saxe-Coburg and Gotha Turquoise Tiara

This tiara is not talked about as it is owned by a non-reigning royal family; however, it is still worn by members of the family at functions that call for it. For instance, Princess Kelly of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha has worn it to the Swedish royal weddings. It has a very interesting look with the turquoises set round diamonds in a cornet style.

The Luxembourg Turquoise Tiara

This is one of the smallest tiaras in the royal families. It contains small turquoises and diamonds. It has a matching necklace and earrings that have been seen on the Luxembourgish royal ladies.
