The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will attend the Coach Core Awards at Loughborough University on Monday 24th September to celebrate the achievements of the young people who have taken part in the programme.
Their Royal Highnesses will be joined by sports stars including marathon runner Paula Radcliffe, tennis player Laura Robson, and netballer Eboni Beckford-Chambers for the afternoon of events.
During the day, more than 200 young Coach Core apprentices will take part in the full day of sports training and mentoring before an awards ceremony where Prince Harry will deliver a speech.
Their Royal Highnesses will also meet some of the apprentices as they take part in drills and team games, before meeting this year’s graduates.
In response to The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry’s combined goal to encourage young people through sport, Coach Core was developed by The Royal Foundation in 2012 following on from the London Olympics.
The Coach Core London programme in partnership with the Greenhouse Charity was Glasgow Life and The Royal Foundation, backed by The Hunter Foundation, introduced the Scotland Coach Core pilot in April 2013 with The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
The programme allows those aged 16 to 24, the chance to become sports coaches allowing them the tools necessary to gain employment, become involved in their community and have a positive influence of their friends and peers.
The programme is a year-long 30 hour-a-week contract, the Coach Core apprentices meet every two weeks to learn new skills, receive mentoring and be trained through various recognised qualifications such as Disability Inclusion training and First Aid, to name a few.
Ongoing learning and training is also a key part of the programme as the young coaches begin their work in clubs and schools within their local community.
Today Coach Core trains hundreds of young people across the UK through its scheme, which connects apprentices with the biggest sports clubs in the country, providing unrivalled tuition, paying them a wage, and setting them up for an exciting future.
