The Queen will most likely be at Windsor Castle on the day she reaches the 70th anniversary of her reign.
It’s just been announced that Her Majesty won’t now travel to Sandringham for Christmas, as a precaution, given that coronavirus infections are on the increase around the UK. And her decision to pass the festive season at Windsor means that, in all probability, she will remain there through the winter months and be in residence at the ancient royal seat when she makes history as the first British Monarch to mark a Platinum Jubilee on February 6th 2022.
The day will still be kept quietly. The Queen prefers to mark the anniversary of her accession in private as it is also the anniversary of the death of her beloved father, King George VI.
This will be the second year in a row in recent times that The Queen has spent Christmas at Windsor. In 2020, pandemic restrictions were in place across the UK, forbidding mixing of households. The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh passed the festive season quietly while other members of the Royal Family kept their own celebrations.
Elizabeth II’s reign began on February 6th 1952. Although the 70th anniversary falls in February, the main events marking her Platinum Jubilee will take place in June 2022.
