‘I don’t matter!’ The Queen jokes as she cuts a cake marking her Platinum Jubilee

The Queen quipped that ”I don’t matter!” as she cut a cake at a reception on the eve of her Platinum Jubilee.

As she was shown the homemade creation, bearing an iced version of her official Platinum Jubilee logo, she was told that it was facing away from her so that the press could see the emblem the right way up.

”Oh, they can see it!” The Queen said with a smile, before adding ”I don’t matter!”

She added ”I think I can probably read it upside down” before taking a knife to cut the first slice. There was time for one more joke, as Her Majesty said ”I think I might just put a knife in it….see if it works…..somebody else can do the rest of it!’

Her Majesty then invited all her guests to have a slice as the celebrations for her Jubilee continued.

The cake cutting came at a special reception held at Sandringham House just hours before the 70th anniversary of her reign. The Queen welcomed members of local charities, Little Discoverers which supports children with movement issues and delayed development, and West Norfolk Befriending, which aims to reduce social isolation by matching elderly people with befrienders, to the event. Also on the guest list were members of Sandringham Women’s Institute and pensioners from the Sandringham Estate who were joined by their families.

As well as tea and cake, there was entertainment as the Hunstanton Concert Band played, with their programme including ‘Congratulations’ as a nod to the Platinum Jubilee. The Queen was presented with a Loyal Address by the Mayor of King’s Lynn. Harry Humphrey, who also showed her the Platinum Jubilee Mosaic, created for her by schoolchildren across West Norfolk.

The Queen was given a posy to mark the occasion containing blooms also used in her Coronation bouquet including lily of the valley.

Elizabeth II will become the first British Monarch to rule for 70 years on February 6th 2022. The day will be spent quietly at Sandringham House. The main events for her Platinum Jubilee take place in the first days of June.
