The Queen honours the Duke of Edinburgh for his services to the Sovereign

The Queen has been pleased to honour her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, for his services to the Sovereign.

Her Majesty has appointed Prince Philip to be a Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order (GCVO).

The Duke’s appointment to the Royal Victorian Order comes on the day when he and The Queen are celebrating 70 years of marriage.

Unlike most honours, appointments to the Royal Victorian Order are made personally by The Queen for services to the Sovereign.

The 96-year-old Duke is one of 41 living people to be bestowed with the honour.

Other recipients include the Duchess of Cornwall, the Duke of York and the Earl and Countess of Wessex.

Members of Her Majesty’s staff have also been bestowed with the honour, including former Private Secretary Lord Geidt and Sir Alan Reid, The Queen’s Courtier.

The Grand Master of the Knights and Dames of the Grand Cross is The Princess Royal KG KT GCVO QSO GCL CD FRCVS FRS, appointed Dame Grand Cross in 1974.
