Prince Philip

Mourners gather outside Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace following the death of Prince Philip

Within minutes of the news of Prince Philip’s death being announced, mourners began congregating outside of Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace to pay their respects.

Hundreds of people have left flowers in memory of the Duke of Edinburgh who died on Friday morning at the age of 99.

Handwritten notes have been left alongside many of the floral tributes, expressing condolences to The Queen and The Royal Family.

In normal times, tens of thousands of people would be expected to gather at the royal residences to mourn the loss of a senior royal.

However, due to the ongoing public health emergency and social distancing restrictions, it is likely that the majority of people will pay their respects from home.

Prince Philip’s funeral plans will be revealed shortly. Officials will be mindful that any ceremony should not encourage the gathering of a large crowd.
