Each year, 8 March is International Women’s Day. This year, for International Women’s Day 2022, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall and The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have taken to social media to highlight the work that The Queen has done.
In a joint post on Instagram early on Tuesday morning, @ClarenceHouse and @DukeAndDuchessOfCambridge have shared several pictures of Her Majesty throughout her life to celebrate all of her hardwork and dedication to the UK and to the Commonwealth.
In addition to the seven pictures in the post, the caption reads, “Mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and Head of State, The Queen’s extraordinary reign has been longer than any other monarch in British history – inspiring a nation and dedicating her life to the service of the Commonwealth and its people.”
The seven pictures mark her Platinum Jubilee, celebrating her 70 years on the throne. They include a photograph of The Queen with the Cambridges at the Chelsea Flower Show in 2019, where Catherine designed the “Back to Nature” garden, separate photos of Elizabeth with both Charles and Camilla.
The post also includes a 2018 photo of The Queen with her late husband, The Duke of Edinburgh, and several of their great-grandchildren. The Duchess of Cambridge took the photo herself while the Royal Family was at Balmoral in the summer and was shared after The Duke’s passing in April 2021.
International Women’s Day was marked in several different countries in the early twentieth century as the suffrage movement gained traction and spread. However, it wasn’t until the United Nations officially declared 8 March to be International Women’s Day in 1977 that it became a globally recognised celebration. It marks all of the ways women have contributed to society, culture, and politics and is widely celebrated around the world.
