They will now go on to Government House, home to the
Governor-General Sir Jerry Mateparae and his wife Lady Janine.
On the lawn in front of the House, the couple will receive a
Powhiri, which is Maori for Ceremonial Welcome. The formal ceremony
closes with Prince William inspecting a guard of honour, and the
firing of a 21 gun salute.
The Government House was built between 1908 and 1910. It has
undergone a two-year £22m makeover, reopening 2011. It has eight
guest suites, a self-contained apartment for the Governor-General
and family as well as a ballroom, conservatory, sitting rooms,
service rooms, kitchens and a wing of offices.
It is also home to priceless artworks and artefacts which include a
portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, painted by Denis Fildes in 1960. As
well as a painting once on display at Windsor Castle of Queen
Victoria, that is on permanent loan from Her Majesty.
The grounds comprise about 12 hectares, and feature exotic species
of trees consisting of several planted by The Queen, Prince Philip
Duke and The Prince of Wales.
The Duke and Duchess will stay in a guest suite next to
eight-month-old Prince George, who will have his own room. Nanny
Maria Borrallo will have a room nearby.
