After giving up his titles, what is The King’s brother, Andrew, now known as?

The brother of The King, Andrew, has given up his titles – so what is he known as now?

In a surprise announcement, on the evening of October 17 2025, Andrew said he would no longer use ”my title or the honours which have been conferred upon me.”

It means that he will no longer be known as the Duke of York.

Andrew received that title in July 1986, on the day of his marriage to Sarah Ferguson. It’s one of the oldest titles in royal use and is traditionally conferred upon the second son of the Monarch.

Since his wedding day, he has been HRH The Prince Andrew, The Duke of York.

Following controversy around his friendship with convicted paedophile, Jeffrey Epstein, he stopped using his HRH.

However, the latest decision goes further. He will no longer be known as the Duke of York but that leaves questions about what he is called.

The title referred to by Prince Andrew is that of Duke of York. As the son of a Monarch, he is automatically a prince. Which means from now on, he can be known as Prince Andrew.

His former wife lost her HRH and the title of ‘The Duchess of York’ when she divorced in 1996. Queen Elizabeth II issued Letters Patent that meant she was then known as Sarah, Duchess of York.

However, she will now relinquish that title and be known by her maiden name, Sarah Ferguson.

Her own dealings with Jeffrey Epstein have also been in the spotlight after an email emerged showing that she contacted him, asking for forgiveness, following an interview in which she had said she had cut contact with him.

The titles of Andrew and Sarah’s two daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, are unaffected. They are HRH and princess because of the Letters Patent issued in 1917 by King George V which conferred that on all children of a Monarch ”in the male line” meaning that all children of a Monarch’s son are entitled to use HRH and Prince/ Princess.

In his statement, Prince Andrew said ”In discussion with The King, and my immediate and wider family, we have concluded the continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal family.”

He continued ”“I have decided, as I always have, to put my duty to my family and country first. I stand by my decision five years ago to stand back from public life.”

And he ended ”“With His Majesty’s agreement, we feel I must now go a step further. I will therefore no longer use my title or the honours which have been conferred upon me. As I have said previously, I vigorously deny the accusations against me.”

Just weeks ago, Prince Andrew was seen being openly ignored by his nephew, Prince William, as the former Duke of York tried to engage him in conversation following the funeral of the Duchess of Kent.

Andrew and Sarah had made a very public entrance to that family event with the prince also trying to engage his brother in conversation following the service at Westminster Cathedral.

Soon afterwards, Sarah Ferguson’s email to Jeffrey Epstein was revealed and seven patronages dropped her immediately.

In recent days, the relationship between Andrew and Jeffrey Epstein has been in the spotlight again.

However, his decision to relinquish his title has come as a surprise.
