King Harald back in Norway and in hospital after falling ill on holiday

Harald V of Norway has returned to Oslo after falling ill while on holiday in Malaysia.

King Harald, 87, was flown back home on a medical plane with his wife, Queen Sonja, at his side.

He is now being treated at the Rigshospitalet in Oslo where he is expected to spend several days.

The Norwegian king was taken to hospital after developing an infection. His own doctor was flown in soon afterwards. The medical team then decided to fit the king with a temporary pacemaker to regulate his heartbeat before he began the journey home.

His son and heir, Crown Prince Haakon, was already acting as regent because of the king’s holiday and will continue in that role while his father recuperates.

An update issued soon after King Harald’s return said that the journey home had gone well and he was recovering. Further tests will be undertaken now he is back in Oslo.
