The Duchess of Kent has made a surprise public appearance as her husband marked a special day.

On the Duke of Kent’s 89th birthday, the Duchess was at his side as his old regiment saluted him.

The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards turned up on the Duke’s doorstep at Kensington Palace to perform ”Happy Birthday” and their former Colonel was delighted to see them.

The Duchess, using a wheelchair, enjoyed the birthday serenade alongside her youngest son, Lord Nicholas Windsor.

The Duke of Kent watched with his own younger brother, Prince Michael of Kent, at his side.

Prince Edward was a serving officer with the Royal Scots Greys between 1955 and 1971 and was Colonel of the Scots Guards until earlier this year when he retired. He was succeeded in that role by the Duke of Edinburgh.

The Duchess of Kent rarely makes public appearances now. She marked her 91st birthday earlier this year.
