‘I’d like to have been friends with Diana’ says Naomi Watts

Naomi Watts has revealed she thinks she and the late Diana, Princess of Wales, could have been friends.

“I think she was someone I’d like to have been friends with,” the Australian actress told Total Film magazine, ahead of next month’s release of ‘Diana’, which will see Naomi take on the iconic role. “I was obviously struck with shock and grief by her death.”

Naomi Watts portrayal of Diana will hit cinemas next month.

The 44-year-old has been busy filming for the upcoming biopic and next month the world premiere will take place in London. Oscar-nominated Naomi has explained playing the Princess and researching for the role allowed her to learn more about the mother of Prince William and Prince Harry.

“I liked the things I learned about her that I didn’t know. She had a rebellious side and a great sense of humour.”

Naomi, who has two children herself, also revealed she believes Diana’s story is one worth telling. “She was definitely a woman of different shades and contradictions and those are the kind of people whose stories are most worth telling, I think”.

‘Diana’ will center around the royal’s final two years and her relationship with Hasnat Khan, something that Naomi wasn’t aware of before taking on the role.

“When I moved to Australia at 14, there wasn’t the constant coverage but she was always in the news. I certainly didn’t know about the love story with Hasnat Khan.”

Diana will be released worldwide in September.
