BREAKING: Rishi Sunak is to become Prime Minister – the 2nd of The King’s reign

Rishi Sunak has been announced as the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom following his success in the Conservative Party’s leadership election.

Mr Sunak replaces Liz Truss who announced her resignation from high office after only 45 days in charge.

The 42-year-old politician is expected to be received in audience by The King within the next day when His Majesty will ask if he can form a government.

Rishi Sunak was the single candidate to replace Liz Truss as Prime Minister after his only other rival, Penny Mordaunt, withdrew from the race on Monday afternoon.

There was speculation that former Prime Minister Boris Johnson could have attempted a comeback, however Mr Johnson decided not to run.

Mr Sunak has made history in his new role. He has become both the first Asian person to hold the keys to 10 Downing Street , and is also the first PM to practise a non-Christian religion – hinduism.

His predecessor also made history, with Liz Truss becoming the shortest serving Prime Minister in British history.
