Queen Elizabeth II’s favourite Windsor Grey retires after 15 years of loyal service

The Queen Elizabeth II Windsor Horse Show

After fifteen years at the heart of the monarchy’s ceremonial life, Tyrone, one of the most beloved Windsor Grey carriage horses, has officially retired from royal duties.

From his early days in the royal service over a decade ago, through to his most recent appearance during President Macron’s state visit in May 2025, Tyrone has carried out his work with unfailing dignity and grace.

Tyrone stands at 17.2 hands and was trusted in some of the most high‑profile moments in the royal calendar.

Notable events he had a leading role in included the King and Queen’s journey from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey as part of the Coronation procession in May 2023, and transporting the Princess of Wales and her children in the Glass State Coach at Trooping the Colour in 2024.

Tyrone, alongside his father Storm, also pulled the Ascot Landau carriage carrying the Duke and Duchess of Sussex on the wedding day in 2018.

According to The Sunday Times, he is now reunited with his dad and sister, Meg at the Horse Trust sanctuary in Buckinghamshire.

The Windsor Greys are synonymous with British ceremonial tradition. Based at the Royal Mews, these grey horses have drawn the sovereign’s state coaches for pivotal events such as coronations, state visits, Trooping the Colour, Royal Ascot, and royal weddings. The term “Windsor Grey” refers not to a breed but to grey – coated horses selected for temperament, strength and appearance, trained to perform under the ornate harnesses that have adorned royal processions since Queen Victoria’s reign.
