The final list of contenders for city status to mark The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee has been revealed with some striking entries.
The contest to mark the 70th anniversary of Elizabeth II’s reign is open to British Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies for the first and Gibraltar, the Falkland Islands and the Cayman Islands all have areas hoping to win the coveted prize.
The most entries come from England, with 22 applications, following by Scotland where 8 areas have put in for the status. There are 3 entries from Northern Ireland, 2 from the Isle of Man and one from Wales. A final decision will be taken in Spring 2022. An expert panel and ministers will consider the applications before The Queen gives her assent to a final decision.
