Buckingham Palace to host wedding ceremonies as The Queen spots business opportunity

Buckingham Palace is throwing open its doors to happy couples wishing to tie the knot. The London landmark could be the setting for civil weddings from later this year.

Ceremonies will take place in the 1844 Room which will be renamed the 1837 room in honour of the year that marriage registration became compulsory in England. The room, a favourite of the Queen who holds many audiences there, will seat up to 60 guests and will have portraits of some of the most famous royal lovebirds in history hung on its ornate walls to set the scene. These can be changed depending on the wedding theme although it’s understood officials have already vetoed use of Henry VIII and any of his six wives for obvious reasons.

The royal gift shop will be adding a line of wedding dresses, based on royal favourites, for brides who really want to add a regal touch to their wedding. Replica uniforms, as worn by William and Harry at their own marriages, will also be available as will copies of the hats worn by famous mothers of the royal bride.

There are also plans to introduce a line of organic confetti after the Prince of Wales expressed concerns about the impact of non-eco-friendly materials on the grounds outside the palace he will one day call home.

Although final details are still being ironed out, it’s understood weddings will only be available on certain days as the palace is a working royal building. But it’s thought that couples will have to enter through the kitchens to avoid disrupting the day to day routine of the office staff.

Buckingham Palace isn’t the first royal residence to welcome civil ceremonies. Kensington Palace and Hampton Court Palace already have licences as wedding venues.
