King Felipe and Queen Letizia preside over a very significant first birthday

King Felipe and Queen Letizia have conducted a joint engagement focused on culture and royal history, as they presided over a committee meeting for the Foundation of the Royal Collections.

On Thursday 30th May, Their Majesties arrived in the portion of the Royal Palace that has been converted into the “Gallery of Royal Collections”, where they were welcomed by the Minister of Cultural Affairs and the President of the Board of Trustees of the National Patrimony, among others.

After posing for a group photo with other participating authorities, the King and Queen of Spain took their seats at the head of the table. From there, King Felipe officially opened the meeting by reading the points on the agenda for the day, which included a look back at the first year of the Gallery, and future projects.

Other authorities intervened to look at the accounting numbers for the first year of activities, as well as illustrating the anticipated schedule of activities to celebrate the anniversary.

King Felipe and Queen Letizia had also officially inaugurated the Gallery last year, after many delays in the project, which started in 1998 – not least the fact that the 2023 inauguration had to be postponed at the last minute due to political instability in the country.

The Gallery for Royal Collections was created by Patrimonio Nacional (the operative branch of the Ministry of Culture) with the aim of “serving as a cultural showcase of the national heritage and diversity, as well as the exceptional quality of the Royal Collections and the Palaces, monasteries, churches and natural spaces that compose it”, according to the Gallery’s official website.

King Felipe and Queen Letizia sit on the Board of Trustees of the Gallery of Royal Collections as Honorary Presidents, with the rest of the Board being composed of an inter-ministerial collegiate body attached to the Administration Board of Patrimonio Nacional.
