Queen Margrethe calls for end of ”senseless war” as Denmark’s Royal Family makes substantial donation to Ukraine

The Danish Royal Household has announced a 1 million Danish kroner (roughly 147000 US dollars) donation to a fund to help Ukrainian people.

The donation will be jointly offered by the Queen Margarethe and Prince Henrik’s Foundation and the Crown Prince and Princess Foundation and will go to “Together for Ukraine”, a header under which many organisations operate and collect funds.

The Court also provided a list of all the organisations that will receive shares of the donations, which include local entities such as DanChurchAid (Princess Marie’s patronage) and the Danish Refugee Council.

Most of the organisations, however, are Danish branches of international entities, like UNICEF, Doctors without Borders, Amnesty International, Save the Children, the Red Cross and UNHCR, the UN’s organisation for refugees.

The announcement of the donation was accompanied by a statement by Queen Margrethe, one of the strongest to date from any royal.

The press release begins with: “Europe is at war again”, and continues, in part: “The progress and hope that flourished throughout Europe after the fall of the Berlin Wall are now crumbling before our eyes”.

Her Majesty has also made it clear how she and most Danes feel about the war: “It makes me infinitely sad to witness what is happening now in Ukraine. […] For us as Danes, the whole situation makes an indelible impression. We sympathize with the Ukrainian people and support all those who provide relief and work to save lives”.

The Queen also spoke of the more than 2 million fleeing civilians, as well as the young military recruits and volunteers: “Unhappy images of children and women who have to say goodbye to their fathers, brothers and husbands fighting for Ukraine as soldiers, but also heroic images of a strong Ukrainian youth fighting for the freedom to which they are entitled and which they are right now defending with their lives”.

The Queen of Denmark ended her message with the powerful statement ”may this senseless war be brought to an end soon”.

On the 24th of February, Russia invaded its neighbour Ukraine, and, since then, more than 2 million people have fled the country looking for safety, while men stay behind to fight increasingly more brutal attacks on their sovereign country.

Royals in Europe and around the world have altered their agendas and presided emergency security councils, donated to relief efforts, supported refugees arriving in the country and strongly condemned the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding as a result of this unprovoked and unjustified attack.
