Luxembourg’s Royal Christenings through the years

Prince Charles, future Grand Duke of Luxembourg, is being christened on September 19th with his closest family around him. The little royal, who was born on May 10th 2020, is being baptised at the Abbey of St. Maurice in Clervaux. The first child of Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume and Hereditary Grand Duchess Stephanie celebrates this special moment at a time of ongoing coronavirus restrictions. However, his family have tended to opt for intimate, family based baptisms in recent years as Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa have welcomed their four other grandchildren. Here, Royal Central looks back at the christenings of the cousins of Prince Charles.

Gabriel Michael Louis Ronny was baptised on April 22nd 2006 at the church of Gilsdorf, a small village in north east Luxembourg. Born on March 12th that year, Gabriel was the first child of Prince Louis and Tessy Antony who married later that year in the same church. Although his arrival had attracted much debate, the christening of the first grandchild of Henri and Maria Teresa was a family celebration with his maternal uncle, Ronny Antony, acting as godfather and his paternal aunt, Princess Alexandra, standing as godmother.

Louis and Tessy’s second son, Noah Etienne Guillaume Gabriel Matthias Xavier, was born on September 21st 2007 and christened on October 27th that year at Gilsdorf parish church. His godparents are Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume, Louis’ older brother, and Patty Antony, Tessy’s sister.

The first, and so far only, granddaughter of Grand Duke Henri was born on June 15th 2014. Amalia Gabriela Maria Teresa was baptised on July 12th that year at the tiny Saint Ferreol Chapel in Lorgues in France. She was the first child of Prince Felix and Princess Claire. Her father’s sister, Princess Alexandra, was her godmother and her godfather was her mother’s brother, Felix Lademacher.

The last royal christening for Luxembourg’s royals, until the arrival of Charles, took place at the Vatican on April 22nd 2017. Felix and Claire’s son, Liam Henri Hartmut, was baptised there at St. Peter’s during a Mass celebrated by the Reverend Dr. George Woodall and Monsignor Camille Perl. Liam, who was born on November 28th 2016, has two godparents – Prince Sebastien, his father’s youngest brother, and Anna-Maria Pamin, who was also a witness at Felix and Claire’s marriage in 2013.
