Crown Princess Mary of Denmark is in Milan for Milan Design Week. On Monday, 17 April, the Crown Princess gave a keynote address highlighting Danish design.
Crown Princess Mary has attended several Milan Design Week events before. When she arrived in Milan this week, she first visited the “This is Denmark” exhibition. The exhibition was created by the Royal Danish Embassy, Creative Denmark, and the Confederation of Danish Industry and runs from 17 to 23 April. The exhibit focuses on Danish design and several key elements, including sustainability, heritage, and craftsmanship.
Her Royal Highness attended a conference on urban development and design focusing on sustainability and gave the keynote address. She discussed the strong history of design in Europe and Denmark’s current role in a resurgence.
She said: “In Denmark, creativity is central in responding to complex problems. This, combined with the key characteristics of Danish design: being simplicity, functionality, and beauty – along with sustainability and accessibility ensures that people and society are at the core of Danish solutions and products.”
The Crown Princess spoke of the importance of sustainability in design as well, explaining:
“Our planet is facing immense challenges, and we must all take responsibility and work together to find solutions that allow us to live sustainably while maintaining the quality of life we so value.”
She then highlighted the roles that Italy and Denmark play in current European design.
The Crown Princess re-wore pieces for all of her events in Milan. At “This is Denmark,” she re-wore a skirt she first wore in 2014. At a dinner in the evening, she re-wore a purple Prada dress that she first wore in 2008.
Milan Design Week runs from 18-23 April.
Later this month, Crown Princess Mary will return to Australia for her first official visit in ten years to learn more about sustainability in the industry.
