Crown Princess Mary participated in a roundtable discussion, ahead of International Women’s Day, about the work and commitments of the Nairobi Summit of 2019.
The Danish crown princess, who has long been involved with the United Nations Population Fund and the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), has worked with organisations since the Nairobi Summit to ensure that girls’ and women’s rights are being advanced.
The Danish Royal House noted that the roundtable discussion included talks of reaffirming what had already been established at the Nairobi Summit, and also “concrete efforts and strategies should be lifted in the future to achieve the goal of women and girls’ right to decide over their own bodies.”
Crown Princess Mary joined in the partially virtual roundtable discussion at County Council Hall at Christiansborg. She was joined by the Minister for Development Cooperation and Minister for Nordic Cooperation and the Chairman of the SRSR network, among others.
The UNFPA’s mission is to “deliver a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person’s potential is fulfilled.”
The Nairobi Summit was held in November 2019 to ensure, on the 25th anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development, work was being done to advance the rights of girls and women.
Last year, Crown Princess Mary joined the ICPD25 High Level Commission to carry on the work of the Nairobi Summit.
At the Nairobi Summit, Crown Princess Mary said: “In my role as Patron for UNFPA, for almost a decade, I have had the privilege to meet people of different age, gender, background, and culture. Young girls and boys, women and men from all around the world.
“Every single meeting, every single conversation or life story I have heard has reinforced for me, without doubt, the importance of knowledge, the power of choice and the empowerment of women is key to improving life for everyone.”
