King Philippe of the Belgians was able to celebrate with his country’s first medallists of the 2024 Summer Olympic Games on Saturday.Â
The Belgian Royal Palace has shared images of the king with gold medallist, Remco Evenepoel, after his win in the cycling. Evenepoel won the 32.4km individual time trial in racing and beat the Italian silver medallist, Filippo Ganna, by nearly fifteen seconds.
The bronze medal in the event also went to Belgium with Wout Van Aert taking third place. These are particularly historic wins for Belgium, as they have not won a medal in this event since the last Olympic Games in Paris in 1924.Â
King Philippe and Queen Mathilde were seen cheering on the cyclists as they competed, despite the continuing rain in Paris; Mathilde has proven that the clear poncho is the fashion accessory of the Paris games, adding it to her outfit again after first showing how its worn, royal style, at the opening ceremony.
