The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, The Countess of
Wessex and Princess Beatrice alongside her parents The Duke of York
and The Duchess of York, attended the service.
At the service, Prince Charles was joined by Sir David’s widow,
Lady Carina Fitzalan-Howard, to lay flowers at a memorial stone
dedicated to the star near Poets’ Corner. His memorial stone is in
the same place as people such as William Shakespeare and Charles
Dickens.
Stars from over fifty years of television attended the memorial
from Ronnie Corbett to Joanna Lumley. Also in attendance were the
likes of Sienna Miller, Betty Boothroyd, Sir John Major as well as
fellow journalists Andrew Marr, Andrew Neil, Terry Wogan and
hundreds of other celebrities.
Sir David died of a heart attack in August of last year while on
board the Queen Elizabeth cruise ship. He conducted many interviews
over his long career including interviewing all eight Prime
Ministers from Harold Wilson to David Cameron and seven presidents
from Richard Nixon to George W. Bush.
His interview with Richard Nixon was his most famous one where he
persuaded the disgraced politician to admit that he “let the
American people down”.
