Zara Tindall will make a high-profile appearance in Germany later this month as she joins members of Europe’s royal families at the opening ceremony of the FEI World Equestrian Championships.
The King’s niece is due to attend the ceremony in Aachen on 11 August, where she will be among the royal guests helping to mark the start of one of the biggest events in the international equestrian calendar.
Joining Mrs Tindall will be Princess Catharina-Amalia of the Netherlands, heir to the Dutch throne, and Infanta Elena of Spain, both of whom share a long-standing passion for equestrian sport.
The visit will hold particular significance for Zara, who enjoyed one of the greatest moments of her sporting career in Aachen. In 2006, she rode Toytown to individual eventing gold at the World Equestrian Games, cementing her place among Britain’s leading riders.
Although Zara is not a working member of the Royal Family, she remains one of Britain’s most recognisable equestrian figures. An Olympic silver medallist and former world champion, she continues to play an active role in the sport and is patron of the charity World Horse Welfare.
The opening ceremony is expected to celebrate the close relationship between European royal families and equestrian traditions. Historic royal carriages from Britain, the Netherlands and Denmark will feature alongside displays involving more than 250 horses, as well as music, dance and cultural performances.
Princess Catharina-Amalia, the Princess of Orange, is expected to formally declare the championships open. It will mark another significant solo engagement for the future Queen of the Netherlands as she continues to take on an increasingly prominent public role.
Organisers have described the evening as a celebration of sport, heritage and international friendship, with competitors from across the world gathering in Aachen for the championships, which run until 23 August.
It has not been confirmed whether Zara’s husband, Mike Tindall, will accompany her to Germany.
