King Harald celebrated his 89th birthday over the weekend with a new photo highlighting the three generations of royalty as the Norwegian monarchy undergoes its deepest crisis to date.
The Norwegian Royal Court shared a new portrait of King Harald with his son and heir, Crown Prince Haakon, and his granddaughter, Princess Ingrid Alexandra, the future queen and who will become the country’s first queen regnant in modern times. The photo was taken earlier this year during a photo session for Princess Ingrid Alexandra’s 22nd birthday.

It wasn’t a particularly celebratory start to his 89th year, with a new poll showing that support for the Norwegian monarchy is at 60 percent, down 10 percent from a poll taken earlier this month.
The polling company Norstat did the polling for NRK, the Norwegian national broadcaster, and revealed that support for the monarchy is in freefall. King Harald still maintains top marks from the public, receiving a grade of 9.2 out of 10; while Queen Sonja received a grade of 8.6.
Crown Prince Haakon received a personal grade of 7.9 out of 10, falling from 8.8 a year and a half ago. The royal with the steepest fall is Crown Princess Mette-Marit, who previously polled 7.4 out of 10 and now sits at a public grade of 3.2 out of 10. Princess Ingrid Alexandra, who waded into the many controversies surrounding her family on her private Instagram, polled a 7.3 out of 10.
The scandal surrounding Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s connection to Jeffrey Epstein unveiled in the latest tranche of unredacted files released by the US Department of Justice has brought greater pressure to the Norwegian Royal Family at a time they’re already embroiled in the legal problems of Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s son, Marius Borg Høiby, who is on trial for criminal counts of rape, domestic violence, drug possession, speeding and violating a restraining order.
Crown Princess Mette-Marit released a personal statement earlier this month, apologising for her relationship with Epstein, saying that “some of the contents of the messages between Epstein and me does not represent the person I want to be” and apologising directly to King Harald and Queen Sonja “for the situation that I have put the royal family in.”
King Harald and Queen Sonja are currently abroad, with Crown Prince Haakon set to serve as regent until early March.
