King Charles knights Sir David Beckham at the home of royal chivalry, Windsor Castle

King Charles speaks to Sir David Beckham after knighting him at Windsor Castle

Sir David Beckham has formally received his knighthood from King Charles in the castle that’s home to royal chivalry.

The ceremony took place at Windsor Castle where King Edward III founded the famous order of chivalry, the Order of the Garter.

Sir David received a KBE from The King for his services to sport and to charity.

His wife, now Lady Beckham, watched from close by as Sir David knelt on the red velvet stool presented to him and bowed his head as King Charles tapped a sword on either shoulder.

His parents, Ted and Sandra Beckham, also witnessed the special moment.

King Charles and the new knight then chatted for several minutes with both laughing and smiling during their conversation.

Sir David Beckham then walked backwards, away from The King, before stopping to bow again. He left the room hand in hand with Lady Beckham.

Victoria, Lady Beckham, designed the three piece suit that the new knight wore to collect his honour. It was modelled on a suit worn by King Charles in his younger days – Sir David is well known for his long standing support of the Royal Family and it appears this now spreads to his wardrobe.

Speaking after the ceremony, Sir David said ”I couldn’t be prouder….I’ve always said how important the monarchy is to my family.”

Lady Beckham also helped dress another of the famous faces collecting their honours at Windsor Castle on the same day. Dame Elaine Page received her DBE from King Charles for services to music and to charity. She was wearing a striking blue coat dress with matching feathered hat and a handbag from Victoria Beckham.

Sir Kazuo Ishiguro was also honoured at the ceremony – he became a Companion of Honour.
