The Duke of Kent’s 90th birthday celebrations revealed and there’s a special link with his much loved parents

The Duke of Kent kept his 90th birthday rather discreetly but details of his low key celebrations have been revealed, days after they finished.

Prince Edward, who’s been a front line member of the Royal Family for over seven decades, enjoyed a special event for his nine decades at the Ognisko Polskie, the Polish Hearth Club in London, which was opened by his parents in the early days of World War Two. It was held the day after his birthday.

The Duke is now its patron with a striking portrait of him hanging in the reception of Ognisko Polskie.

To mark his 90th, he enjoyed a lunch at the club where he was joined by his younger brother, Prince Michael of Kent, 83, as well as friends.

British Poles, a media organisation working in both Polish and English, shared images of the party online after some of their members joined the celebration.

It was a low key event but the Duke was surprised with a cake and candles as the lunch continued.

This year is one of the saddest birthdays that Prince Edward has known. His wife of 64 years, the Duchess of Kent, died on September 4 at the age of 92 and the Duke led mourners at her funeral at Westminster Cathedral last month.

The Duke of Kent was born on October 9 1935 and unexpectedly succeeded to the dukedom at the age of just 6 when his father, Prince George, was killed in an air crash on operations during World War Two.

He was raised by his mother, Princess Marina, alongside Prince Michael and their only sister, Princess Alexandra, who is now 88.

After a long and distinguished military career, the Duke of Kent became a full time working royal and continues with engagements today, at the age of 90.

It’s understood the Royal Family will come together for a special celebration for his 90th at some point in the near future.
