Prince Charles, newest heir in Europe, jumps into his role as the five year old watches his father take Luxembourg’s throne

The newest heir to a throne in Europe took to his role with gusto and literally jumped into the part as he became first in line.

Prince Charles, aged five, was on hand to see his father become Grand Duke of Luxembourg.

And as he took his seat in the Chamber of Deputies, for the solemn moment his dad was sworn in as Head of State, he did what any five year old would do when presented with a fabulous looking chair. He jumped at it, several times, before wriggling into place.

If Luxembourg’s politicians were prepared to stand to welcome their new Grand Duke, Charles was having none of it and remained resolutely sat down as his parents, Guillaume and Stephanie, made their way into the chamber for the ceremony.

The little prince was in the care of his grandmother, Maria Teresa, and his grandfather, Henri, who had just abdicated as Grand Duke. The two appeared totally smitten with their grandson who behaved beautifully throughout the ceremony.

In fact, his demeanour was remarked on just before the swearing in took place. It was noted that Grand Duke Guillaume and Grand Duchess Stephanie had insisted their elder child was present to see his father become Head of State, mindful that, in time, that role will pass to Charles. And there were smiles and nods of agreement as it was noted that the decision had gone very well.

A little later, when the new heir to the throne was referred to by name, he added another sweet moment to the historic events by turning to his grandmother and asking ”is that me?” before receiving a reassuring nod.

Once the formalities were over, little Charles got a hug from his parents and was determined not to let his dad out of his sight, following the new Grand Duke as he greeted politicians and hanging on to his leg. The young prince walked out of the chamber hand in hand with his grandparents.

After the swearing in ceremony, he joined his mum and dad for the short walk back to the Grand Ducal Palace. However, the rather loud military band was less exciting for the new heir who covered his ears as he got closer to them.

He was all smiles when he joined his parents and his younger brother, two year old Francois, for a balcony appearance where they were greeted by huge crowds. And showing he really is at the heart of his royal family, he insisted on a cuddle with his uncle, Prince Sebastien, as they all waved to wellwishers.

Charles and Francois will spend the rest of the day at home while their parents continue with formal events marking the start of the reign of Grand Duke Guillaume.

The day will conclude with a glittering gala at the Grand Ducal Palace.

Among their guests will be the President of France and the President of Germany. The King and Queen of the Netherlands and the King and Queen of the Belgians attended the abdication and accession ceremonies and will also be at the gala banquet.
