The rarely seen sapphire tiara you should know about

Princess Stephanie of Luxembourg wears a sapphire tiara for the birthday celebrations of Princess Ingrid Alexandra of Norway

Sapphires remain one of the most popular gems, and September babies have countless royal pieces to pick from. The Grand Duchess Adelaide Tiara is a century and a half old but still stuns on every outing for Luxembourgish Grand Ducal Family.

This diamond and sapphire tiara once belonged to Princess Adelheid-Marie of Anhalt-Dessau who married the future Grand Duke of Luxembourg and was created between 1865 and 1870.

The tiara features a kokoshnik-style silhouette, with rose-cut and brilliant diamond leaves and berries surrounding a large round sapphire in the centre.

Grand Duchess Charlotte wore the sparkler for several portraits beginning in the 1920s and often chose it for state events, as well as weddings and galas. However, Grand Duchess Josephine only wore the tiara once in 1995 for a Guildhall banquet in London.

Grand Duchess Maria Teresa has worn the Grand Duchess Adelaide Tiara a handful of times, but often loans it to her daughters-in-law.

Princess Tessy, the former wife of Prince Louis, wore the sapphire and diamond piece in 2012 when Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume married Countess Stéphanie de Lannoy. Stephanie herself then wore the tiara in 2013. And Princess Claire first wore it in 2016 and again in 2018.
