King Frederik and Queen Mary begin their visit to the Faroe Islands with a surprise extra guest

Ahead of the official start of their visit to the Faroe Islands, King Frederik and Queen Mary of Denmark made a private visit to the uninhabited island of Koltur.

They were joined by their youngest daughter, Princess Josephine, as they explored the picturesque island, which is home to 160 sheep.

The trio were able to make the most of the day, exploring the remote island’s landscapes and learning more about the Faroes before their three day tour began.

The Danish King and Queen and the 14-year-old princess visited two different historical settlements that date back to the Viking era.

While they were visiting the settlements, they learned about the environmental restoration work being done in the area to bring native plants and wetland conditions back.

King Frederik, Queen Mary, and Princess Josephine arrived in Tórshavn on the Royal Yacht Dannebrog to begin the first official visit to the Faroe Islands since the start of the new reign. Tórshavn, located on Streymoy Island, is the largest and capital city of the Faroe Islands.

Both King Frederik and Queen Mary wore traditional Faroese dress for their arrival. Her Majesty’s costume included a silver brooch and buckle that were specially designed for her by local artist Astrid Andreassen.

The three day trip will continue on with a busy schedule. The royals will be visiting Vágur, Fámjin, Tvøroyri and Ei.
