Prince Philip to be buried alongside Queen Elizabeth II – after ”waiting” for Her Late Majesty

The late Duke of Edinburgh will be finally laid to rest at the same time as Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Following his funeral at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor in April 2021, the coffin of Prince Philip was placed in the Royal Vault. It will be brought for burial in the King George VI Chapel within St. George’s alongside that of Queen Elizabeth II.

It was always the intention of the couple that they would be buried together and they decided that, whichever of them passed away first, their final interment would not take place until both could be laid to rest at the same time.

Queen Elizabeth II and her consort, The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh will lie for eternity in the Chapel built for her parents, King George VI and his Queen Elizabeth. The ashes of Her Late Majesty’s only sister, Princess Margaret, are also interred there.

The simple chapel lies on one side of St. George’s Chapel, Windsor. A simple black slab in the floor remembers ‘King George VI’ and ‘Elizabeth’ with just their dates beneath them. A stone remembers Princess Margaret.

Words from the poem ‘The Gate of the Year’ are also placed in the chapel as a memorial. King George VI famously read those words in his Christmas broadcast in 1939, in the earliest months of World War Two. They are said to have been chosen for him to use by his elder daughter who will now be buried alongside her parents.

Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip will be interred in the chapel in a private ceremony, attended only by family.
