The Queen made history in June after being the first reigning monarch to win the Gold Cup

Arnaud Bamberger, Cartier UK’s executive chairman, and Cartier’s racing consultant Harry Herbert, presented Her Majesty with the prize on Monday in Buckingham Palace. The footage was then shown at the 2013 Cartier Racing Awards at London’s Dorchester Hotel on Tuesday.

Upon winning the the award, the monarch said:

“Thank you very much indeed and it’s very nice to accept the award on behalf of Estimate, who did all the work.

Estimate is sitting in a field at Sandringham now having a rest and watching the deer and things like that. Perhaps she’ll come back into training next year.

I shall be thrilled to keep that [the prize] and have it as a memento. I was just looking at it and thinking it could join all the trophies we have at Ascot. We have all the trophies. I have actually managed to win the Gold Cup, which is unusual.”

Besides Estimate, the other nominees lined up to win the prize were Red Cadeaux, Michael Owen’s Brown Panther, Altano and Tac De Boistron.

Estimate became became one of the most famous horses in the world after her spectacular performance in the Ascot Gold Cup earlier this year. She won the Gold Cup back in June ridden by Ryan Moore and trained by Sir Michael Stout.

The Queen was the first reigning monarch to win the cup in the race’s history. This win was followed by iconic images of the Queen cheering on enthusiastically as Estimate made that cold afternoon a day to remember.

The Queen has hinted that the filly could be kept in training next year.
