Queen Elizabeth II

The Queen named 2017 Londoner of the Year by London Press Club

The Press Club Awards were handed out on Thursday at the Corinthia Hotel in White Hall, London. The most prestigious award presented at the event was for Londoner of the Year, which went to Her Majesty. Her son, Prince Andrew, the Duke of York accepted on The Queen’s behalf.

The keynote speech was given by the Lord Speaker, The Rt Hon Lord Fowler. The host for the awards was BBC journalist and news presenter, Kate Silverton. Categories included the national newspaper, the Sunday Newspaper of the Year Award, the Scoop of the Year Award, and Print Journalist of the Year. Other awards presented were for digital, broadcast and business journalist of the year.

The judges praised the monarch for her “unstinting and faithful service to London.” They also called her an “icon of our city.”

Lord Guy Black (husband of Prince Charles’s former Deputy Private Secretary, Mark Bolland), the Executive Director of the Telegraph Media Group, said: “Her Majesty has presided over our second Great Elizabethan Age – and pulled off a task of extraordinary historical and constitutional importance…For,3 on the one hand, she has been a beacon of stability, our steadfast rock in an age of great turbulence, anxiety and change.

“Yet at the same time as being a figure of such continuity, our sovereign has also presided over an extraordinary transformation in the monarchy to equip it for the modern age and the next generation.”

Chairman of the judges, Bill Hagerty, said: “From Brexit to Trumpism, from fake news and alternative facts to real politics and genuine dramas at home and abroad… 2016 delivered mightily across all platforms. No surprise, then, that the standard of journalism considered by the judges was, in their opinion, as high as it has ever been.”
