<![CDATA[Today was a historic one in terms of the relationship between the United Kingdom and Ireland – it marked the first ever official state visit to Britain by Irish President Michael D Higgins.
The visit began with Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh greeting President Higgins and his wife, Mrs Sabina Higgins, at Windsor and Eton Riverside Railway station. From there The Queen, the President, and the rest of the party traveled to Windsor Castle.
Whilst at Windsor, The Queen toured the Royal Collection with the President, pointing out items with significance to Ireland.
Meanwhile, Prince Philip guided Mrs Higgins through the collection. The President seemed extremely taken with original works by Oscar Wilde and Jonathan Swift, while Mrs Higgins enjoyed viewing bog oak carvings of a traditional Irish harp and an owl which were acquired by Queen Victoria.
