Duke and Duchess of Sussex reportedly gifted cottage on Sandringham Estate by The Queen

Just like his older brother, Prince Harry and his new bride have been gifted a home on the Sandringham Estate.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have reportedly been given the charming York Cottage as a wedding present by Her Majesty The Queen.

In 2011, The Queen gave the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Anmer Hall located on the approximately 20,000-acre estate of Sandringham right after their nuptials. Sandringham is around 110 miles northeast of Kensington Palace where the fab four all live.

York Cottage was once known as Bachelor’s Cottage and was home to Queen Elizabeth’s grandparents King George V and Queen Mary, the Duke and Duchess of York. They were gifted the cottage from George V’s mother, Queen Alexandra.

The Prince of Wales’ now famous letters to his mistress, the married Freda Dudley Ward, were sent from the cottage and let into how much he hated the cottage writing under the address “F*** it!!!!”.

In 2013, The Telegraph gave a very colourful description of the cottage, writing: “Like his father, George V seems to have been devoid of aesthetic sensibility, but he loved York Cottage, an assemblage resembling three Merrie England pubs joined together. Longing to do the house up herself, poor Queen Mary had to put up with the ghastly Maples furniture he had purchased. Frances Donaldson wrote of it: ‘Too large and too full of footmen to be unremarkable in Surbiton or Upper Norwood, York Cottage in its own context is a monument to the eccentricity of the family who lived there.'”

The home currently isn’t in living condition as it is being used as the Sandringham offices. Renovations will bring the cottage up to a royal standard.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have also signed a two-year lease on a home in Great Tew, Oxfordshire while construction is underway. The home is on the same estate as Victoria and David Beckham’s countryside house and Soho Farmhouse, owned by Meghan’s close friend, Markus Anderson.
