While visiting the Universty of South Pacific, Duke and Duchess of Sussex both addressed room.
The Duchess had the honour of announcing two new grants for the “Fiji National University and the University of the South Pacific, allowing each of them to run workshops which empower their female staff.”
Meghan spoke about the “pride” of being a university graduate, adding “Everyone should be afforded the opportunity to receive the education they want, but more importantly the education they have the right to receive.”
The grants come from “The Association of Commonwealth Universities, which has Her Majesty The Queen is Patron of.”
Speaking of his role as the new Commonwealth Youth Ambassador, the Duke said: “My goal is to listen to your concerns, learn more about the work you are doing to combat these issues, and highlight your remarkable achievements at the highest levels.”
He then announced four new scholarships from the “Queen Elizabeth Commonwealth Scholarships for students from the Caribbean and Pacific regions.”
The scholarships “will support young people to travel between these regions and study climate change and resilience at the University of the South Pacific, Fiji National University, or the University of the West Indies.”
He ended the speech by noting: “The Commonwealth is all about cooperation and collaboration.
“Your generation, and our children, will benefit from what you are doing today.”
Back outside they split up meeting each with two student groups.
The Pacific Youth group represents youth from across the Pacific with NGO’s to give a voice to youth.
They felt having Meghan interested in their work could be better because she is a “humanitarian” and can “give us a new perspective on youth” that they might have not had before.
The group described a Pacific youth as someone who is “in touch with their culture and themself.”
