Despite only just arriving back in the UK after the D-Day commemorations in Normandy, Prince Philip has a schedule full of engagements for this week.
Yesterday, on the eve of his birthday, the Duke joined The Queen at a reception at Buckingham Palace to recognise the UK’s innovative technology sector.
Today, 8,000 guests will arrive at Buckingham Palace for a garden party and Prince Philip will spend part of his birthday making sure the guests are welcomed and feeling comfortable.
The engagements don’t stop there! On Wednesday, the Duke will host the World Fellowship 27th Anniversary Dinner at Windsor Castle as the founder of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Awards Association.
Exactly a week after the Duke visited France, he will travel abroad again; this time to Germany. When there, on Thursday Prince Philip will present campaign medals in Fallingbostel before returning to the UK.
On Friday he will visit Hindleap Warren Outdoor Education Centre in Sussex before charing the Senior Colonel’s Conference at Buckingham Palace.
To end this busy week as the oldest member of the royal family, Philip will be attending Trooping the Colour which is The Queen’s Official Birthday Parade.
Alongside Her Majesty, it is widely expected the couple will attend the Royal Ascot meeting which begins next week.
The 93 year old has been admitted to hospital on a number of occasions over the past years. These include when he was admitted with a bladder infection during the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations in 2012.
Last year, the Duke spent his 92nd birthday in hospital after undergoing abdominal surgery. He stayed in hospital after this operation for 11 days on top of a two-month recovery period.
Prince Philip also was seen wearing a bandage on his right hand in May after a minor operation. However, this had little effect on the Duke’s engagements and he continued to carry them out as planned.
His 93rd birthday will be celebrated by the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery who will fire a 41-gun salute from Hyde Park at noon.
At 1pm, the Honourable Artillery Company will fire a 62-gun salute from Gun Wharf at the Tower of London, with the extra guns a tribute from the citizens of London.
