Cab driver John Sheen, who has been driving for 45 years, drove
Charles from Clarence House to the St Bartholomew today. This was
the third time in his career he has driven the Prince.
For his service, Charles gave Mr Sheen a £10 note and commented
that he had a “jolly trip in the taxi,” per MSN online. This will
be the third £10 note he plans to add to his framed collection.
Back in 2004 he drove the Prince of Wales on two occasions.
Mr Sheen was asked about his Royal passenger today and commented:
“Fantastic as always. He’s a good lad.”
Charles was in West Smithfield on Thursday to meet members of the
Worshipful Company of Hackney Carriage Drivers. The group work for
Hackney Carriage Trade which includes some of the infamous London
black cabs.
The Prince heralded the drivers for the service they provide to the
country and commented: “You are an institution. You are one of its
great traditions.”
He also mentioned the exceptional generosity the drivers provide
for their yearly Children’s Magical Taxi Tour. A group of around
100 taxis drive chronically ill youngsters and their families to
Disneyland Paris for the weekend.
The Worshipful Company of Hackney Carriage Drivers were granted a
Royal Charter in 2013. They received a Grant of Livery in February
2004.
In 2004 Charles held a gathering for London cab drivers to
acknowledge the charity effort that many of the drivers
participated in especially aiding disadvantaged children.
