When The Duchess of Cambridge was admitted to hospital in 2012 with
morning sickness, Jacintha Saldanha, the nurse who was treating
her, fell victim of a hoax call from two Australian radio DJs. A
few days later, Jacintha committed suicide.
Hundreds of people sent letters of condolence to the Saldanha
family, including The Duke of Cambridge who wrote to say how
saddened he and Catherine were to hear the news of Jacintha’s
death.
Ms Saldanha had been duped by a hoax phone call from two DJs at an
Australian radio station who had been attempting to pretend to be
The Queen and get information about Kate’s health.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, Jacintha’s husband, Ben,
revealed that he cannot forgive the radio station that set up the
prank call which was blamed for her death.
Prince William wrote his letter three weeks after the the death,
and said: “Jacintha and her colleagues looked after us both
extremely well, and I am just so sorry that someone who cared for
others so much found themselves in such a desperate situation.”
In addition to William’s letter to the family, Sarah, The Duchess
of York also sent a message that referred to her own mother’s death
in 1998.
In a letter to Ms Saldanha’s daughters, Sarah wrote: “I send so
much love for your broken heart. I am so sorry you are without your
Mummy. I lost mine in a car crash, and it is so final, and you wish
you had said Goodbye and said so much.”
The two Australian DJs, Mel Greig and Michael Christian, faced no
charges over Jacintha’s death.
