During the visit, Tony Tan will be accompanied by his wife, Mrs
Mary Tan, and the couple will stay in Buckingham Palace. This is
the first State Visit to the United Kingdom by a President of the
Republic of Singapore.
The announcement came as the British Prime Minister, David Cameron,
welcomed the Prime Minister of Singapore to Downing Street in
London for talks.
After the announcement came to light, Mr Cameron said: “I was
discussing this with Her Majesty last night and she is very much
looking forward to it.” The Prime Minister continued by saying:
“It’s excellent news and a moment, I think, to demonstrate our
close economic, political and strategic ties.”
The visit comes just ahead of the 50th anniversary celebrations
since Singapore declared independence from the United Kingdom,
which will be commemorated in 2015.
The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh have previously paid three
State Visits to the Republic of Singapore in 1972, 1989 and, most
recently, in 2006. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge also visited
the country in 2012 as part of The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee
celebrations.
Dr Tan will visit the UK for three days starting on October 21.

Singapore declared its independence from Britain in 1963, when it merged with Malaya to form Malaysia. However, two years later Singapore left the Malaysian Federation, and became the Republic of Singapore in 1965. So it is 50 years as a single, sovereign, nation which is being celebrated in 2015.
