The Queen appoints Penny Mordaunt as the first ever female Defence Secretary

The Queen has been pleased to approve the appointment of Penny Mordaunt MP as the first ever female Secretary of State for Defence.

Ms Mordaunt’s appointment comes after Theresa May sacked her predecessor Gavin Williamson following an investigation into the leak of information from a National Security Meeting.

Mr Williamson denies he is the source of the leak saying neither him or his team would ever leak information from a National Security Meeting.

The new Defence Secretary, Penny Mordaunt, was recently Her Majesty’s International Development Secretary.

Rory Stewart MP replaces Ms Mordaunt at the Department for International Development.
