Who is Prince Philippos of Greece and Denmark?

The youngest child of King Constantine and Queen Anne Marie of Greece, Prince Philippos was born on 26 April 1986 at St Mary’s Hospital in London where his family was living in exile. He was named after his paternal cousin, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

He has four older siblings: Princess Alexia (b. 1965), Crown Prince Pavlos (b. 1967), Prince Nikolaos (b. 1969) and Princess Theodora (b. 1983).

Although the Greek monarchy was abolished, the royals still retained their titles. Philippos’s full title is His Royal Highness Prince Philippos of Greece and Denmark. The Greek royals are members of the extended Danish and Spanish royal families as King Constantine’s younger sister is Queen Sofía of Spain and Queen Anne-Marie’s older sister is Queen Margrethe of Denmark.

He was baptised into the Greek Orthodox Church in London with his godparents in attendance on 10 July 1986. The King and Queen chose Diana, Princess of Wales, King Juan Carlos of Spain, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, Infanta Elena of Spain and Princess Benedikte of Denmark among the godparents.

The Prince was raised in London and did not visit his homeland until he was seven-years-old in 1993 when his family was allowed in the country for a private yachting trip.

Part of his education was spent at the bi-lingual Hellenic College of London (which his parents founded) and the United World College-USA. The Prince also attended Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University in Washington D.C.; he graduated in 2008 with a B.A. in foreign relations. It’s been reported he speaks English and Greek fluently. It is also highly possible he speaks Danish as his mother was born a Danish princess.

A very private person, Philippos does not attend many royal events. He was present at the wedding of Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden to Daniel Westling in 2010. Unlike some of his siblings, he also keeps his social media profiles private. He is the godparent to his niece Amelia (daughter of his sister Alexia) and nephew Prince Odysseas-Kimon (son of Crown Prince Pavlos).

The Prince once said to Gotham Magazine, “I work for a living. Everyone has to work, and in that sense, I’m like everyone else.” Philippos currently resides in New York City where he works as an analyst at Ortelius Capital.
