<
Hillsborough Castle is the official residence of Her Majesty The
Queen in Northern Ireland and residence of the Secretary of State
for Northern Ireland. The Castle has hosted numerous landmark
political events and continues to be popular stop for tourists from
all over the world.
On 1st April 2014, Historic Royal
Palaces took over management of the Castle from NIO. Details
from HRP will be forthcoming in regards to improving the Castle as
well as visitor experience.
During The Queen’s Audiences with the Secretary of State for
Northern Ireland, First Minister of Northern Ireland, the Deputy
First Minister of Northern Ireland and Chief Executive of Historic
Royal Palaces, Prince Philip met recipients of The Duke of
Edinburgh Awards.
The Duke of Edinburgh met around 75 recipients of the DOE Gold
Awards and took the opportunity to speak to each individual award
recipient and their families. The Duke met with representatives
from the Young Farmers’ Clubs of Ulster, Belfast Education and
Library Board, Campbell College, NI Fire and Rescue Service, Royal
School Armagh and Triangle Housing – all of whom received Operating
Authority License Certificates.
Founded in the UK 1956 by Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh’s
Award has since expanded to 140 other countries. The awards
acknowledge adolescents and young adults for completing a series of
self-improvement exercises modelled on Kurt Hahn’s solution to the
“Six Declines of Modern Youth.”
The Queen and The Duke of
Edinburgh continue their visit tomorrow with a stop at Crumlin
Road Gaol in Belfast to tour the‘Game of Thrones’ set at Titanic
Quarter. After their tour, they will attend a reception and lunch
at Belfast City Hall. Later, The Royal couple will attend a Garden
Party at Hillsborough Castle.
