was a cold and dreary day at Alanbrooke Barracks in Paderborn,
Germany, but that didn’t stop hundreds of family members from
showing support for their brave soldiers following their safe
return from Afghanistan.
The Countess of Wessex, who is Royal Colonel of the battalion,
presented 400 soldiers with campaign medals to mark their safe
return from Operation Herrick 20 in Helmand Province,
Afghanistan.
The Countess praised the soldiers for their hard work in
Afghanistan. “Naturally the end of the campaign causes us to
reflect and we will never forget those that made the ultimate
sacrifice or those whose lives have been changed forever by injury
and of course we continue to support the families who have been
left to carry on.”
“With this in mind it is worth reminding ourselves that your
actions have constructively affected the lives of countless
Afghans, allowing children the chance of an education,
opportunities for work, as well as freedom of movement around the
country for so many – all the things to be proud of.”
“To all of you on parade today, on behalf of Her Majesty The Queen,
thank you for your commitment, your drive and your
professionalism.
“I am honoured to be here to recognise your efforts, your
dedication to your battalion, your regiment, your country and your
Queen.”
After the parade, The Countess met with several of the soldier’s
families and relayed her gratitude for their support.
As part of the Army 2020 reforms, the battalion will move to back
to Wiltshire, and will cease to have a presence in Germany.
