Andrew Mountbatten Windsor surrenders gun licence to police after officers visit Royal Lodge

Andrew Mountbatten Windsor has been made to give up his gun licence to police after officers visited him at his current residence, Royal Lodge.

Metropolitan Police visited him last month and the former prince agreed to relinquish his certificates for firearms and shotguns.

It means that Andrew will only be able to use his guns, which are understood to still be in his possession, when he is with another licensed gun owner.

As reports of the licence surrender emerged, the Metropolitan Police said ”on Wednesday Nov 19, firearms licensing officers attended an address in Windsor to request that a man in his 60s voluntarily surrender his firearms and shotgun certificate. The certificate was surrendered, and we will be not be commenting any further at this stage.”

The licence was given up just days after Buckingham Palace confirmed that King Charles was stripping Andrew of all his titles. The King issued Letters Patent to remove Andrew’s HRH and Prince and asked the Lord Chancellor to strike his other titles from the Roll of Peerage. Until then, Andrew had been Duke of York, Earl of Inverness and Baron Killyleagh.

It was also announced that Andrew had given up his lease on Royal Lodge, the thirty room house on the Windsor estate that he has lived in for over 20 years. He will move to a property on the Sandringham estate in the first months of 2026.

Andrew Mountbatten Windsor had spoken previously of his pursuit of shooting as a sport.
