The other titles Prince Andrew has given up

Prince Andrew, Duke of York

The King’s brother, Andrew, has given up his title and honours in a shock move.

In a statement, the second son of Queen Elizabeth II said he would ”no longer use my title or the honours which have been conferred upon me.”

It means he is no longer known as the Duke of York.

That is one of the oldest royal titles and has, for centuries, been conferred on the second son of the Monarch.

Andrew received it in 1986 when he married Sarah Ferguson who is also relinquishing her style. Until today, she was known as Sarah, Duchess of York but will now revert to her maiden name and be known as Sarah Ferguson.

However, Andrew received two other titles on his wedding day, gifts from his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

As is traditional, he received a Scottish title. He was made Earl of Inverness. He has given up that title, too.

There was also a title linked to Northern Ireland. He was made Baron Killyleagh but that has been relinquished as well.

Andrew also gave up all his honours including membership of the Order of the Garter and the Royal Victorian Order.

He remains a prince as he is automatically that as the son of a Monarch.

However, he agreed to stop using his HRH several years ago.
