Grand National Memories: Zara Tindall’s horse finishes third in the world’s most famous horse race

A horse co-owned by Zara and Mike Tindall finished in third place in the 2015 Grand National held at Aintree Racecourse.

It was a huge gamble entering Monbeg Dude in the National – the world’s most famous horse race which attracts a global audience of over half a billion people.

But the gamble paid off, with the ten-year-old bay gelding finishing 3rd of 39 runners, picking up £105,500 in prize money.

The 2015 Grand National was Monbeg Dude’s last ever race before retiring to Gatcombe where he now lives with the Princess Royal and the Tindall family.

The Tindalls paid £12,000 for a quarter share in the horse when he came up for sale at auction.

Zara called her then boyfriend Mike an ‘idiot’ for paying that much money in a ‘hopeless’ horse.

Minds were soon changed though, with Monbeg winning £261,997 in prize money over his racing career, including a huge win in the Welsh National at Chepstow.

In total, Monbeg Dude made two visits to Aintree to run in the Grand National.

In 2014, he finishing a respectable 7th position behind winner Pineau De Re for Dr Richard Newland.

In 2015, only Many Clouds and Saint Are finished ahead of him in an impressively run race.
