King Felipe and Queen Letizia continue visits to areas hit by wildfires in Spain

King Felipe and Queen Letizia speak to firefighters

King Felipe and Queen Letizia have continued their visits to communities hit by wildfires across Spain.

They are undertaking three days of trips to the regions most impacted by the blazes. They are spending time with firefighters and emergency workers as well as people who have been forced to leave their homes.

The second day of their trips saw King Felipe and Queen Letizia in Verin to learn more about coordination efforts to prevent further damage and to meet with locals. They headed to Ourense where they spent time talking to those working in agriculture who have seen crops damaged by the fires.

The first day of their tour included a stop at Sanabria Lake National Park in Zamora. While at the park, they met with firefighters who are currently working to stop the wildfires from spreading further.

The couple then visited the Monastery of San Martin de Castaneda to meet with business owners and farmers who have been affected by the fires. Their Majesties also spoke with local residents who were evacuated weeks ago and have finally been able to return home.

There has been criticism of King Felipe and Queen Letizia in some parts of Spain for what is seen as a delayed approach to the fires which have been blazing for several weeks. They were reported to be on private holidays in Greece and although Felipe returned briefly as Spain invoked emergency measures, Letizia has remained out of public view until now.
